| El día más importante | The Most Important Day. |
| Leviticus 16 stands at the heart of the message of Leviticus. This chapter presents the Day of Atonement, the most solemn day in Israel’s religious life, when God provided ceremonial cleansing for the priest, the sanctuary, and the whole people. After fifteen chapters filled with sacrifices, priests, blood, purity, and impurity, Leviticus 16 clearly shows that humanity’s greatest problem is sin before a holy God, and humanity’s greatest need is the atonement God provides. |
| The chapter begins by recalling the death of Nadab and Abihu, who approached the Lord’s presence improperly. That context highlights a foundational truth: God is holy and must be treated as holy by all who come near Him. Aaron, though he was the high priest, could not freely enter the Most Holy Place. He could only do so at the appointed time, in the appointed way, and with the sacrifices God had commanded. The restriction, the holy garments, the blood, the incense, and the entire ritual proclaimed that God’s holiness must never be taken lightly. |
| Yet God’s holiness does not only reveal the danger of sin; it also magnifies the grace of God. God did not leave His people without hope. He Himself provided a way to deal with the guilt of sin in a manner consistent with His justice. Divine grace does not ignore sin or minimize God’s holiness. Rather, grace provides sacrifice, mediation, purification, and instruction so that the people may live before the Lord. |
| The people were to respond to this day with humility, rest, and repentance. They were not to approach atonement with indifference, but with broken hearts, recognizing the seriousness of sin and the greatness of divine mercy. This teaches us that sin must never be confessed superficially. God’s holiness and the grace revealed in atonement should lead us to forsake sin and depend completely on the mercy of the Lord. |
| Finally, the Day of Atonement points beyond itself to the sufficiency of Christ. The entire ritual anticipated the perfect work of the Lord Jesus Christ. Christ is the true Mediator, the Lamb of God who takes away sin, and the Second Adam who opens the way into God’s presence. What Aaron did repeatedly and in a limited way, Christ fulfilled fully and forever. In Him we find cleansing, forgiveness, access, and communion with God. |
| Therefore, Leviticus 16 is not merely a description of an ancient Israelite ritual. It is a powerful proclamation of God’s holiness, the seriousness of sin, divine grace, and the glorious sufficiency of Christ. The most important day for Israel points us to the most important event in history: the cross, where God satisfied His justice and displayed His saving grace in His Son. |
