Colossians 3:12
Colossians chapter 3 can be read as a practical manual for the Christian life. In this chapter, the apostle Paul reminds us that God’s grace does not only save us, but also deeply transforms the way we live. The effects of that grace are not invisible; they are clearly displayed in our relationship with God and with others.
Paul begins by reminding us of who we are in Christ: chosen, holy, and beloved. These words do not describe what we have achieved, but what God has done for us. We have been chosen according to His sovereign will, set apart for Him, and made recipients of His unchanging love. This is our new position, and from it flows the whole of the Christian life.
Often, a lack of joy and purpose arises when we forget this reality. We live as though our identity depends on our performance, when in fact it rests entirely on God’s grace. We do not live in order to earn His favor; we live because we have already received it in Christ.
But grace does more than give us a new position; it also brings about deep internal transformation. The Holy Spirit produces new affections within us. Where there was once anger, hostility, and selfishness, God now forms compassion, kindness, humility, and meekness. He does not merely suppress disordered affections, but puts them to death and replaces them with affections that reflect His own character.
Tender compassion moves us toward the suffering of others with mercy. Kindness leads us to do good intentionally, even when there is no recognition or return. Humility enables us to see ourselves rightly before God, as people fully dependent on His grace. And meekness empowers us to respond with patience and self-control, even in the face of provocation.
All of this is possible because God had compassion on us when we were spiritually dead and saved us by grace alone. Therefore, the call of this passage is clear: to live in His grace and to live by His grace, allowing the word of Christ to dwell richly in us and to shape our affections for the glory of God.
For Reflection
- Am I living in light of my position in Christ, or have I forgotten it?
- What affections are shaping my daily reactions?
- How can I reflect God’s compassion and kindness today?
The grace that saved us is the same grace that continues to transform us every day.
